When you download the MetroBus zip archive on the download page it will unpack into a folder called Grouped Lines. This folder contains ESRI Shapefiles and supporting files.

Shapefiles spatially describe geometries: pointspolylines, and polygons. These shapes represent routes and stops. Each item may also have attributes that describe the items, such as the name or temperature.

Shapefile shape index format (.shx)

Shape index format file is a spatial index file for geometries stored in the shapefile.

Shapefile attribute format (.dbf)

Database file for holding non-geometric attribute data (e.g., integer and character fields).

Shapefile projection format (.prj)

A text file containing coordinat system and projectiion information about the spatial information stored in the shapefile.

Shapefile spatial index format (.sbn)

A binary spatial index file, which is used only by ESRI software.

Shapefile shape format (.shp.xml)

Metadata for the Metro Bus route geometries in an XML format.

Shapefile shape format (.shp)

Shape format file contains the vector data for the Metro Bus route geometries.

You may query the shapefile with a open-source program called ogrinfo. Run a little script like this:

#!/bin/bash
for FILE in *.shp; do
ogrinfo -geom=SUMMARY $FILE
done

and you’ll get:
